“We always try to do something a bit out of the ordinary,” said Jeff K. Kim, stylist to Carly Chaikin, who worked with the actress on her look for the Critics’ Choice Awards this past weekend. The resulting Thakoon ensemble was an alternative to the traditional floor-sweeping gowns that usually crowd the red carpet. As the 26-year-old star of Mr. Robot put it, “I just wanted to look cool and chic.” Chaikin has several glamorous fashion moments to her name: She wore a sultry Juan Carlos Obando outfit for the 2016 Golden Globes and was equally alluring in Reem Acra at the Emmy Awards in September. But for Sunday’s ceremony, Kim and Chaikin had something different in mind. “We wanted to do something that was a bit more menswear-inspired,” said Kim, “while keeping a feminine edge.”

Chaikin’s look—a white long-sleeve cropped top with a cascading pleated train—was a light counterpoint to her high-waisted black cigarette trousers. Accessories were kept clean in a palette of black, white, and gold with a touch of shine coming from her Sophia Webster diamond-like heels. “When people wear dresses, I want to wear pants and vice versa,” said Chaikin. “Fashion is fun and I love collaborating with Jeff on red carpet looks because we end up laughing.”

With only a few weeks until the Golden Globes, where her costars Rami Malekand Christian Slater are up for awards, Chaikin is already pondering her next red carpet move. Is there anyone she looks to for fashion inspiration? “Angelina Jolie,” said Chaikin. “She always has this effortless sense of glamour.”
