USA Network’s “Mr. Robot” said a hearty “hello friend” to Emmy voters at a chic FYC event in New York City. On the red carpet at the Metrograph, Gold Derby landed exclusive red carpet interviews with stars Rami Malek, Carly Chaikin, Christian Slater, Portia Doubleday, and Grace Gummer (click on each of the individual links below).
The sophomore drama series aims to expand upon its first-year awards success. For its critically-lauded first season, “Mr. Robot” earned a SAG Award nomination for star Malek, two Golden Globe victories for Best Drama Series and Supporting Actor for Slater (as well as a nom for Malek), and six Emmy Award nominations, including Best Drama Series and Writing, winning Best Drama Actor for Malek and Best Music Composition for Mac Quayle.
With HBO’s juggernaut “Game of Thrones” out of contention at this year’s Emmy Awards, “Mr. Robot” seems poised to pick up some additional nominations, potentially in directing for series creator Sam Esmail, who helmed every episode of the show’s ambitious second season, for supporting actresses Chaikin, Doubleday, or Gummer, and for supporting actor Slater.
After the red carpet, the audience took their seats inside the theater for a six-minute recap of the second season before all five stars took to the stage for a panel discussion. Following the panel, attendees had the opportunity to enjoy an open bar and socialize with the cast before leaving the Metrograph with a complimentary copy of the tie-in book “Mr. Robot: eps1.91_redwheelbarr0w.txt,” written by Esmail and Courtney Looney and inspired by Elliot’s journal from Season 2.
